Acupuncture for Digestive Issues

Digestive issues can have a significant impact on everyday life and, whilst not a replacement for conventional medical treatment, acupuncture can be a useful adjunctive therapy for a number of digestive disorders:

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterised by abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, and constipation. Acupuncture has shown promise in helping to alleviate IBS symptoms and improve overall bowel function.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD)

Conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. While acupuncture cannot cure IBD, it may help manage symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and inflammation, improving the quality of life for affected individuals.

Constipation and Diarrhoea

Acupuncture may help regulate gastrointestinal motility and improve stool consistency and frequency, offering relief for individuals experiencing chronic constipation or diarrhoea.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, leading to heartburn, regurgitation, and other symptoms. Acupuncture may help regulate oesophageal sphincter function and reduce the frequency and severity of reflux episodes.

Nausea and Vomiting

Whether caused by morning sickness, chemotherapy or other factors, nausea and vomiting can be debilitating. Acupuncture can alleviate nausea and vomiting by regulating the secretion of acids from the stomach and calming the nerve endings which send signals to the vomiting reflex part of the brain.

Stress-Related Digestive Issues

Stress and anxiety can exacerbate digestive symptoms. The calming effect of acupuncture on the nervous system may help reduce stress levels and improve overall digestive function.
